K9 Activity Tracking System Generation 4 Quick Start
Recommended minimum requirements for SERVER/CLIENT/DESKTOP Installation of KATS Generation 4:
- .NET Frame Work 2.0 installed
- 256 MB of RAM (Recommended - 512 MB)
- Processor Speed: 1.5 GHz, any processor
- Hard Disk : 1 GB of available space
For the Client-Server Installation, Registering the application on server by running the application is mandatory before the Client machines run the application.
Supported Operating Systems: Windows 2000, Windows 2003, Windows XP, Windows Windows VISTA
Before beginning your installation ensure you read all of the documentation to assist you in understanding how the system functions and the steps you need to take. Level 1 and Level 2 systems are for single user installations or installations on a single desktop or laptop. The level 1 and level 2 systems are designed to merge their records into the Level 3 or Level 4 Agency systems, which are capable of compiling stats from multiple users.
Understanding Your License
License Type 1 - A license type 1 is designed to be installed on the individual laptop, home system or other system used by each individual officer. This system will synchronize with the license type 3 and license type 4 agency systems.
Note: Once all systems have been installed, the table structures within KATS can be customized by you to meet your agency specific needs, or you can simply use the tables as they are installed with the system. If you customize the tables for your agency specifically, you must create the tables on your Level 3 or Level 4 system, and then using the KATS built in export system, export those tables to a disk or USB thumb drive and then import them into each Level 1 within your agency. This is done immediately after the initial setup in order to ensure all users of the KATS system are using the same nomenclature and the systems will synchronize all imported data correctly.
License Type 2 - The license type 2 is identical to our license type 1 however it allows for a single officer who is working multiple dogs. For example, some agencies have officers who work a patrol dog as well as a detector dog. The deployment of the Level 2 system is identical to that of the Level 1.
License Types 3 & 4 - KATS Generation 4 now allows for up to four or six dog teams on the agency versions. If you are ordering for more than six teams you will require an additional add on license. (The Level 3 system provides for four teams and the Level 4 provides for six teams) If you are doing an agency installation that involves merging the information from patrol cars to the office, do not enter any K9 or K9 handler name in the agency version. That information will be automatically entered into the system on the first import of information from the Level 1 or Level 2 single user system (typically a laptop in a patrol car) to the agency system.
VERY IMPORTANT: If upgrading from KATS Generation 3 ensure you read this information regarding .NET issues before installing KATS Generation 4.
KATS Installation Procedure
NOTE: Before beginning your installation ensure you read all of the documentation to assist you in understanding how the system functions and the steps you need to take. In particular make note of setting up an administrator user as the first user during all installations. Level 1 and Level 2 systems are for single user installations or installations on a single desktop or laptop. The level 1 and level 2 systems are designed to merge their records into the Level 3 or Level 4 Agency systems, which are capable of compiling stats from multiple users.
Step 1. Exit all programs that you have open. Insert the installation CD or installation USB drive into your computer. The system should automatically begin the install procedure. If the system does not begin to install automatically, open the drive and click on the setup.exe file to begin.
Step 2. Click on the KATS Installation Icon to start the installation procedure.
Step 3. The system will begin to unpack the files to a temporary installation directory on your hard drive. The system will then proceed with installation. During the installation you will be prompted to select a server, client or desktop (or laptop) installation. Select the appropriate installation and follow the prompts. The system will also ask you which database to use. You may select Standard for dual trained (patrol/detector dog), Detector dog or Search and Rescue modules. Select the appropriate choice and then continue with the installation. Keep in mind that there is a standard template that installs into each version, so you may see patrol entries in the tables for detector dogs installations etc. These are only sample entries to assist you in getting started. You can remove any entries from the tables that are not appropriate for your installation. The system is completely customizable to your needs.
Step 4. When all phases of the installation are complete you will be presented with a Finish icon. Click on that icon to close the installation window and KATS will open to a log in screen.
Step 5. When the system first starts you will be prompted for a user name and password. The first person logging in must be flagged as an administrator. Fill in the appropriate information and click on close when you have completed all the information. We recommend that for a user name, you use your proper first name and surname, as this will be reflected on the reports.
Network Installation
Important Note Regarding Server Installation: When installing on a network, install KATS on the server first. For the initial installation KATS must be installed directly on the server, not via a remote terminal.
Select the Server installation button when prompted by the KATS Installation procedure. When installing on the clients, select the client button when prompted. The system will provide you a browser window from which to select the path to the location where the KATS database information is stored. The path should be similar to:
\\ Server\KATS40 directory\configdb\config\kats.config
Server Installation Tips
One must have Administrative rights on the machine to install KATS As MSI files require full trust (admin rights) to install application. Always install application using local administrative account whether you are going to make a client installation or a server installation. It doesn’t matter if it is Windows XP or Windows 2000 server. In that case the installation routine will never restart in case of any user logon. Never install KATS using a domain user even if he or she has admin rights on machine.
Inserting your Registration Code
When KATS first installs, it installs as a 30 day evaluation system for demonstration purposes. If you have started to input data using the evaluation version and wish to purchase, you can do so at any time and all the data you have input will be retained. To register KATS from a demonstration mode to a fully registered mode, simply change the information as provided on your license information sheet. Then click on the register now button to complete the registration. The registration screen will open up each time you start up the system when in demo mode, or can be accessed from the Reference/Licensing updates menu selection.
Note: If you are trying the system in evaluation mode, do not make any attempt to change this information as it will invalidate your evaluation. Simply press the “Continue Evaluation” button to proceed.
Your system has a unique registration code unique to you. The reports that are output from KATS use the agency information from this registration to place your agency name on the reports. Ensure you follow the instructions on your License information form carefully. A misplaced space, improper capitalization or slight misspelling will cause the registration to fail. If you do get an error message, ensure you go over the license information carefully and ensure everything you have input into the registration screen is IDENTICAL to what you see on the licensing information. The only reason you will continue to get a message stating that your system evaluation has expired is due to this information not being input correctly.
Synchronization: Agencies that are using the License Type 1 on mobile workstations to input their information and then import the information into the Main License Type 3 or License Type 4 main office system need to follow this procedure:
Step 1: Follow the instructions as above for installation. Create the tables you require that are custom for your agency in the License Type 3 system you have installed on your main office system.
NOTE: DO NOT INSERT ANY HANDLER, DOG OR TEAM INFORMATION INTO THE OFFICE SYSTEM AT THIS POINT. THE SYSTEM WILL PERFORM THAT FUNCTION AUTOMATICALLY ON THE FIRST IMPORT OF THE OFFICERS INFORMATION FROM THEIR LAPTOP OR INDIVIDUAL SYSTEM. If you put the handlers name on both systems, KATS will read it as two different persons even though the name is identical. This programming is done to ensure that multiple handlers, narratives etc can be used on each training and incident number.
Very Important! It is strongly recommended that on all installations the first account be entered as an administrative account with administrator rights. This can be done very easily by inserting the first user as ADMIN and creating an administrative password. This allows you flexibility within the system.
Step 2: Export the tables you have created using the Manage Data/Export menu to a USB drive.
Step 3: Take the USB drive to each single user laptop you have installed KATS onto and use the Manage Data/Import menu to import the tables you have created into each system. This will ensure all tables for each handler are identical.
Step 4: Have each handler create his or her handler, dog and team profiles in their workstation or mobile laptop. They can then use the tables developed by the main system and in turn export their data back to the main office system.
Importing records from KATS Generation 3 to KATS Generation 4
To import from Generation 3, do a full export from your Generation 3 system. If your version has a box that says "Export All Files" ensure it is checked before you export. In some versions of KATS this box is hidden. To activate it, when you are open the Export box, hold down the ALT key and the A key at the same time (ALT+A). This will activate this box at which time you can place a check mark in the box. Export your files. Make a note of where your exported files are at.
After you have installed KATS Generation 4 from the Utilities Menu select Manage Data/Import. Next, browse to the directory where you exported your KATS Generation 3 files to and Import the .kad file that was created by KATS Generation 3. Your transfer of Generation 3 to Generation 4 is now complete.
User Setup
Very Important! If you are setting up a system where handlers will have data entry only access and not administrator access within the system, it is imperative that you create an administrator user account. We recommend that you create an administrator account on every installation. This must be done with the first user account that is created upon installation. This is done very easily by inserting the first user as ADMIN and creating an administrative password. This allows you flexibility within the system and does not impact on the number of teams you can enter into the system.
Step 1: Each officer who will be set up with a dog as a dog team must be set up for at least data entry in the system and the box must be checked that says “This user is a dog handler”. KATS is set up so you may have unlimited users that have various access rights, however will only allow a limited number of handlers. This allows you to have administrators and other personnel access the system without having to purchase additional licenses.
Step 2: Ensure you click on the “Save” button at the end of each screen. Once the handler information has been input, follow the same procedure to enter the dog information.
Step 3: Go to the team screen. In most circumstances the system will have created the team for you if you are on a single user system. If not, select the appropriate officer and dog and put them together as a team. Ensure you click on the “Save” button to confirm and save the entry.
Once the above steps have been completed you are set up and ready to enter data into the system.
Customizing KATS
As you proceed using the system you will develop various types of Activities that you want to track. The system already has codes built in that include a variety of applications regardless of which version of the software you installed. To customize the program, you can edit any table within the system to add or delete entries, as you require. To do so you can use the configuration menu at the top of the screen, or simply open the drop down menu, scroll to the bottom of the list and click on ADD NEW ITEM. Clicking on this will create a new line in the table for you where you can add your own custom terminology. You can also delete any items in this list that you do not require to remove cluttering your system with unneeded table entries. This will greatly streamline your system and customize it specifically to your needs.
Internet Connectivity
KATS Generation 4 has a number of Internet links built in that will allow you to go directly to websites related to Eden Consulting Group as well as to the KATS support sites. You will also find links to K9 related vendors on the net. If you are on a system that is connected to the Internet, you can take full advantage of these links to go directly to those sites.
